4. Students Meet with 60 Legislative Candidates During Summer Break

Students from across the state came together this summer to form Legislative Strike Teams that introduced OSA and OSCC’s priority legislative issues to 60 of the candidates for the Oregon legislature.  OSA student interns scheduled the meetings and outreached to students in the candidates’ districts to participate in the meetings.  Meeting with the candidates on their home turf, students talked with candidates about:

Funding and Tuition: providing a substantial investment in our college and university systems to keep tuition increases low and to prevent the funding crises our institutions are currently facing
Need-based Aid: not taking any steps backwards in access to a postsecondary education by investing in the Oregon Opportunity Grant so that all eligible full and part-time students can continue to receive the Grant
ASPIRE (Access to Student assistance Programs In Reach of Everyone): Investing in this high school mentoring program that gives students the tools to access a postsecondary education, bringing knowledge and support to those students currently underrepresented on our college campuses: students of color, low-income students, first-generation students, and rural students.
Tuition Equity: extending in-state tuition rates to all qualified Oregon high school graduates, regardless of documentation status.

Students also introduced the Shared Responsibility Model to candidates, an exciting new model for need-based aid that promises an affordable college education to all students who commit to their education by taking on a reasonable amount of work and borrowing.

Students hope to see these issues at the heart of the debates this election and look forward to meeting again with legislators during the legislative session.
