6th Annual Oregon Students of Color Coalition Conference

Oregon Student Association
February 2nd through 4th students from across the Northwest traveled to Western Oregon University’s campus in Monmouth, Oregon for the 6th Annual Oregon Students of Color Coalition Conference.  Over 200 students chose from over 50 workshops where they learned about issues affecting communities of color and the skills to create change on their campuses and in their communities.  Students also took in speeches from prominent activists who imparted their advice on organizing as students of color.  A highlight of the conference was Saturday’s lunch during which internationally respected Native American and environmental activist Winona LaDuke spoke on her experience as a student activist.

Following LaDuke’s speech, students fulfilled OSCC’s tradition of putting the new skills and knowledge that the conference offers them into action.  Armed with construction paper and glue sticks, students made Valentines for their legislators proclaiming their love for a bill soon to be introduced in the Oregon legislature: tuition equity.  Tuition equity would allow all qualified Oregon high school graduates access to in-state tuition rates, regardless of documentation status.  “At a time when having an educated citizenry is more important than ever to our state,” said OSCC Board member and ASPSU Multicultural Affairs Director Kamar Haji-Mohamed, “tuition equity legislation will bring us closer to ensuring that all Oregonians have access to a college degree.”

Students left the conference ready to take on real challenges on their campuses.

“The OSCC Conference allowed members of student government and members of the student groups on their campuses to learn about new issues and get trained in new skills together,” said Haji-Mohamed.  “It gave my student government a better understanding of the students we’re representing and developed relationships between us and students of color on our campus.”
