Students Are in the Capitol: Students Start Session with a Strong Showing in Salem

Oregon Student Association
Although the 2007 Oregon legislature convened on the same day that school began for Oregon’s public universities and community colleges, students still found ways to get to the Capitol between classes to tell their legislators why access to a quality postsecondary education is important in their lives.  Students met with numerous legislators during the first few weeks of session to introduce their legislative priorities.  Students’ strong presence was followed with an invitation to give the very first testimony before the House Education Committee.  On January 12th, Key Jackson of Western Oregon University and Megan Driver of Oregon State University told the Committee about students’ priority issues for this legislative session, including funding for our universities and community colleges, the Shared Responsibility Model, ASPIRE, and tuition equity.  The following week, Courtney Morse of Portland State University and Lorena Landeros of the University of Oregon gave a similar presentation to the Senate Education Committee.  For a summary of this testimony, please see our Powerpoint Presentation

In addition to the testimony described in the previous item on tuition interest earnings, students have also testified specifically on ASPIRE, a volunteer-based mentoring program that equips high school students with the tools to access a postsecondary education.  This testimony was very well received by the House Education Subcommittee on Higher Education.

Students look forward to making their presence known both inside and outside the Capitol building on February 22 when they will hold their rally for postsecondary education as well as a Lobby Day.
