Founded in 1975, OSA is a coalition of student governments dedicated to the representation, service, and protection of the collective interests of over 100,000 students in postsecondary education.
After years of state disinvestment in postsecondary education as our state struggled through a recession, students entered the 2007 legislative session optimistic that an economy on the upswing would finally provide the funding our neglected colleges and universities so desperately need. But despite a 20 percent overall increase in the state budget, the Co-chairs’ budget cut funding for universities and colleges from the levels recommend by the Governor.
Without adequate state support and tuition already sky-high, students don’t know what other option they have—they’re putting on their aprons and holding a good old fashioned bake sale. On May 3rd, students will again travel to Salem to sell brownies and cookies to legislators in a symbolic attempt to earn some extra funds for our starved university and community college systems.
“Students shouldn’t have to resort to a hat-in-hand tactic to get the money we need for our colleges—our state needs bigger problem solving. Through our bake sale we hope to show legislators just how important their responsibility to our higher education systems is.”
On May 3rd students will also be delivering thousands of postcards to legislators. Signed by students across the state and delivered in giant-sized piggy banks, the cards call on legislators to “bank on students” as an investment in their education will bring exponential returns to the state when they enter the workforce as a degree-carrying professional.
